Pizza Cravings and Portion Control: Can't We All Just Get Along?

Whether you're a teenager, a 20-something recently out of college, or really anyone who grew up in the United States, chances are you have had and have been to your fair share of pizza parties. New York style, Chicago style, thin crust, thick crust...whatever your taste buds crave, really, it's all delicious.

Here's the problem: Pizza is technically a junk food. A serving size of pizza is generally one regular sized piece. Who can seriously stop after one slice of pizza?? (And no, I'm not talking the huge pieces you get in New York or the Jumbo Slices of DC social hot spots. I'm talking one small, Papa John's slice piece of pizza.)

Even with this small piece you're committing yourself to a huge number of calories and fat. Here are a few examples from brands we all know:

Papa Johns: One slice of a large cheese pizza (14") contains 300 calories & 11g fat.

Pizza Hut: One slice of a large cheese pizza (12") contains 210 calories & 8 grams of fat.

Dominos: One slice of a large cheese pizza (14") contains 230 calories & 7.5 grams of fat.

Just think about how many calories you've ingested during a late night college study binge or at your friend’s Football & pizza party last Sunday. Probably better not to reflect on that actually…

I’ve tried many of the pizza options provided by many of the diet frozen food companies & haven’t been wholly impressed. However, I just found one, courtesy of a daily Hungry Girl email, that is out of this world!

They’re called Pizza Fit n’ Free. You can only order them online & you have to freeze them as soon as they arrive because they’re perishable. These 7” pizza wonders come in cheese only, allowing you to add any toppings that you like. So far I’ve added a variety of veggies, including broccoli, and found it to be amazing! The pizzas are the perfect dinner-size portion & absolutely delicious!

The entire pizza (as it comes, not with your additional toppings) is only 252 calories and 0 grams of fat! That’s pretty great right? And you get to eat it all, so you don’t have to sit there salivating over the rest of the pizza, battling with yourself over whether or not you should indulge in more. You can indulge in it all!

You bake your pizza at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes and then it’s ready! Shipping included, they’re pretty reasonably priced. You get 6 pizzas for $25.49 (including shipping) – only about $4.25 a pizza. The deals get better as you go up in quantity too. This brand is definitely worth a try. Major thanks to the recommendation I got from Hungry Girl!

Yum! I imagine they use fat free cheese? They sound really good, but as far as serving size goes, was it enough to fill you up, or do you recommend eating them with a side dish (like a salad) as well?

Yes, I believe that they do use fat free cheese, though I honestly could not tell (and I usually can). Here is actually what the site says about that:

"We have developed a way to process the fat out of the cheese, similar to the way they process the fat out of skim milk. The cheese is 100% real dairy mozzarella cheese with no fat substitutes."

It is definitely pretty filling, but adding veggies on the side is never a bad idea. If you're going to eat it for lunch, it's enough. For dinner I'd recommend a salad, side veggie, or something else nutritious. Keep the pizza as the main component. You could also add more veggies and some protein like chicken - that will help to add a "filling" feeling post-pizza.

very cool, the frozen pizza idea is da bomb, I've been looking 4 that kinda thing for years.

As far as the fat free cheese goes, it is probably the same type of fat free cheese that you can buy in the grocery store (from Kraft). I buy it all the time and it tastes great.

Thanks for the post, Cam. They're definitely delicious!! I actually suggest heating them for a bit longer than the 8-10 minutes they prescribe...I have a pretty new oven and 13-15min usually does the trick for me.
